Major US Health Organizations Call for Sugary Drink Tax

The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association are now pushing for a new tax on sugary drinks. In a joint statement the two health organizations called for legislators to regulate the pricing of sugary drinks and limit how they can be marketed. Another measure noted in the statement includes the introduction of more health friendly options to children’s menus and vending machines throughout the nation.

According to the organizations, the average child consumes 12 ounces of sugar a day while recommended amounts stand at no more than 8 ounces per week. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association are aiming to end the worrying connection between sugary drinks and Type 2 diabetes and obesity.
