Guyana Prison Escapee Captured; Two Others Still on the Run

One of the three inmates who escaped from the Lusignan Prison in Guyana earlier this week has been caught.

Murder-accused Travis Evans, who scaled a wall at one of the prison’s holding bays and escaped along with Sudesh Dyal and Dextroy Pollard on Monday, was apprehended around 7:45 a.m. today, in an operation at a Linden Soesdyke roadblock.

“A joint security services team received a tip-off that he was on the road probably awaiting transportation…I wish to commend all those persons who assisted and I now encourage others to be equally helpful,” Samuels said, as the hunt continues for Dyal and Pollard.

Four policemen and a prison officer have been in custody since the trio’s escape. Those officers were on duty at towers two and three, which is the area from which the inmates made their escape, and it has been suggested that they may have been asleep on the job.

During a press conference held after the escape, Samuels had said the officers “were not alert”.

“I am forced to conclude that it is very likely that they were sleeping, thus resulting in them not observing the prisoners – first in their attempt to get the razor wire separated in order to pass and then during the process of them escaping by scaling the fence,” the prison chief said at the time.

Both Dyal, 23, and 29-year-old Pollard were on remand for breaking and entering and larceny.
